After just one month living in Winston Salem and serving as your new pastor, I already feel like this is “home.” Perhaps one reason for that is my husband Doug unpacked our boxes in record time. In less than a week he had everything in place including all of our family pictures on the wall.
Going down the hallway, I realize we have had a lot of family portraits made through the years mainly through church directories. Out of all of our possessions, these have become the most treasured ones of all. From every photo, we can see each stage in which our family has grown through the years. It has been a bitter – sweet reflection. In one way, we can never go back to those days of our youth. But in another way there is so much joy for what the future holds. As both of our daughters have left home for college, we realize that the landscape of our family portrait may change drastically in the next 5 – 10 years. So we are planning on treasuring every moment!
I am wondering if that has been your experience, too? The last church directory that Mt. Carmel has done was in 2010. I realize that for many of you, your family portrait has changed in some profound ways. Many changes for better or worse have also taken place in the life of our church. But while our lives change, the love of God never changes. (Malachi 3:6).
These “moving pictures” also serve to remind us that change is a part of the life cycle. Looking back at those photos, we can also look forward to the promise that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28).
Doug and I and our daughters are both humbled and excited to be included in the next stage of Mt. Carmel’s family portrait with you. We look forward to one day being able to look back and see the amazing things God has done in us and through us. We also hope to see many new families added to our church picture.
On September 17-19th, I want to encourage you to participate in our new church directory at Mt. Carmel. It’s important to mark this time as a family of God. Will you take a moment to sign up for your portrait sitting today?
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Mary Miller
